Naxos Town (Chora) is the capital City of Naxos Island, Greece and it is where the island’s main harbor is located. It is also popularly regarded as the most beautiful of the Cycladic villages which makes it very popular among tourists. Naxos Town (Chora) is an ancient Greek town, dating back to the Pre-Mycenaean years. The Portara and other historical monuments are testimonies of its age-long existence.

The present-day Naxos town (Chora) is in the same location as the ancient Chora city whose capital houses Naxos Island’s port on its west central coast. Another historical monument still present till today is the Trani Porta, which is one of the access gates into the ancient town.

Architecture and style

Naxos town’s (Chora) great architecture makes a major contribution to the town’s spectacular beauty. The town has maintained its ancestry blend of Cycladic and Venetian housings till present day.

The hillside can be found fully lined up with whitewashed houses linked narrow paths which lead to antique shops where tourists can purchase local handicrafts and jewelry has souvenir and keepsakes.

The Castle, a peculiar Venetian structure which is also sometimes referred to as Crispi or Glezos tower stands on the town’s apex. This tower was built in 1207 by Marco Sanudo after conquering the Cyclades. Near the castle, the Jesuit Commercial School and the Archeological Museum of Naxos are located till date.

On moving towards the north of Naxos Town (Chora), there is a paved road leading to the Portara, which serves as an entrance to the Temple of Apollo and the islet of Palatia.

Important tourism facilities such as banks, car rentals, bus hubs, and luggage storage are located. The waterfront and Marina spread into the headlands and is joined by the Agios Georgios beach.

Fun activities in Naxos town

Because Naxos town (Chora) is a huge tourist center, there are lots of taverns, cafes, and bars lining the waterfront which makes it a large cluster of tourism activity. Being a huge tourist center, you can find lots of cafes, taverns, and bars line the waterfront thus making it a major tourist activity point in the town.

Agios Georgios Beach, Naxos

This beach is highly important among Naxos Beaches as it is the closest to the capital and is easily accessed by foot. It is a sandy beach with crystal clears waters. You can easily find water sports facilities, sunbeds, and umbrellas. It is also a good place to meet new people as it is usually crowded. It is a very large beach with real waves adorning it!

A lovely view of Paros is visible across the sea, and it is a good sport for windsurfing.

However, Naxos Greece isn’t all about beaches. The inland area is as interesting as the beach and walking towards the Trang area region exposes you to lush green landscape clustered with whitewashed houses. This is where the original Naxos with its Venetian touch can still be fully experienced.

There are usually gatherings of local musicians and dancer around the mid-years which allows tourists socialize and mingle with one another in the presence of good music and quality wine.
